Meta Revises AI Training Terms but Experts Say Safeguards Remain Insufficient

·4 min read·The Verge ↗

Meta has updated its terms of service to remove language explicitly authorizing unrestricted AI training on news publisher content. However, legal experts analyzing the revised language say the new terms still contain broad language ("associated with your products or services") that could permit similar data use under a different framing. The change appears responsive to publisher and regulator pressure but may not substantively limit Meta's ability to train models on third-party content.

What This Means for Your Business

Content publishers and media companies should not assume this update resolves their AI training concerns with Meta. Legal risk remains high, and regulatory focus on AI data licensing is intensifying globally. News organizations and creative professionals may want to consult counsel on contractual protections, licensing negotiations, and participation in data-use class actions before allowing further content access by Meta platforms.
